Chapter 13

My heart leapt straight into my throat as I whirled around, the Libro Sanguis still clutched in one arm.

In the darkness, I barely had a moment to register the shape of a woman charging at me. I lowered the tome and tried to brace myself for the impending tackle. I didn’t realize the fake out until it was too late. Her right fist hurtled into my jaw with a deafening crack. The tome fell from my hands, the world turning black as I collapsed.

A woman’s voice roused me from my unconscious haze. “Good morning, sunshine. You seem to have gotten a little lost.”

My head lolled to one side, accompanied by the embarrassing sensation of what I was pretty sure was my own drool running down my chin.

I blinked as I tried to adjust to the light in the room. I was in the living room of the penthouse, sitting in a chair, and from the feel of the cold steel against my wrists, they’d been handcuffed behind my back.

As my senses returned, I could make out the distinctly recognizable face of Kasey Chase sitting in the chair opposite me. She was a little shorter than the TV made out, and her caramel brown hair ran down well past her shoulders. There was a hint of sweat on her brow, but it was the glimmer in her hazel eyes that I found a little disconcerting. She sat drumming a rhythm on her thigh with her fingers.

Sure, I was strapped to a chair and arguably at her mercy, but I’d also snuck into her apartment in the dead of night. She didn’t even seem rattled. I guessed having the Feudal Court put a five million dollar bounty on your head was one of those sink or swim moments.

Boy, did I know about those.

“Oh, good, it’s you,” I muttered.

Kasey abruptly stopped drumming. “I don’t know who else you were expecting, given you broke into my room.”

My handcuffs clinked against the back of the chair as I tested them. The last time I’d been in handcuffs had been an altogether unpleasant experience. The Inquisition had been hellbent on sacrificing me to usher in the Apocalypse. They had known who they were dealing with and had used a set of cuffs that inhibited my abilities. These, on the other hand, felt like standard police issue cuffs. They would hold me for all of a second should I decide I needed to be free.

“I don’t understand,” I muttered. “You were in the bed.”

“Something was in there, but it wasn’t me,” she replied.

“A decoy,” I replied with a nod. She was anticipating something. But why? “Clever. But why were you expecting me? Are you just that paranoid, or did somebody see me?”

“It’s not paranoia when everyone is actually trying to kill you,” Kasey replied. “As for you, I saw you coming.”

We had been meticulous in our approach, careful to ensure that none of Kendra’s security detail would see our surveillance efforts. As for the office suite we’d been using, its windows were tinted, making it difficult for anyone to see inside.
